Every 16 July, Ibiza's fishing communities honour the Verge del Carmen — patron saint of sailors and fishermen — with maritime processions in almost every port: Sant Antoni, Santa Eulària, Eivissa, Es Cubells and Portinatx. After mass, a statue of the Virgin is carried onto a flower-decorated fishing boat that sets sail followed by a flotilla of dozens of boats; out at sea, a laurel wreath is offered for the safety of all who live from the water.
